Robert Gundling!

Dr. Robert Gundling is the Deputy Operating Officer for Sunshine Early Learning Center in Washington, DC. He is an Early Childhood Educator with over 40 years of experience working with children, families and early childhood professionals. He holds a Doctorate of Education in Early Childhood Education, a Master’s Degree in Elementary School Counseling and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.  His experience includes: teaching kindergarten and first grade in a public school system, administrator of a variety of Early Care and Education programs, government positions in Early Childhood Education and teaching courses at colleges and universities.

Robert will be leading our dialogue on Mar. 16th, 2017, regarding chapter 7 of Sara Langworthy’s book Bridging the Relationship Gap: Connecting with Children Facing Adversity.

Rebecca Schlafer Nealy!

Rebecca is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics (Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Healthat the University of Minnesota. She received her PhD (2010) in child psychology from the Institute of Child Development and MPH in Maternal and Child Health (2016) at the University of Minnesota. Prior to coming to Minnesota, she received her Masters and Bachelors in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Most of Rebecca’s research focuses on understanding the developmental outcomes of children and families with multiple risk factors. She is particularly interested in children with parents in prison, as well as the programs and policies that impact families affected by incarceration.  In addition to her academic work, she also volunteers as a guardian ad litem.

Rebecca will be leading our dialogue on Mar. 9th, 2017, regarding chapter 6 of Sara Langworthy’s book Bridging the Relationship Gap: Connecting with Children Facing Adversity.

EARLY CHILDHOOD BOOK STUDY GUEST EXPERT #5 ANNOUNCED!

Chelsea Hetherington!

Chelsea Hetherington, Ph.D., is a Program Evaluation Specialist for the Children & Youth Institute within Michigan State University Extension. In this role, she collaborates with early childhood and 4-H staff statewide to collect data on their programming to demonstrate its impact. Chelsea works with staff through in-person and virtual consultations to assist in the planning and design of program evaluation studies, facilitation of the collection of data from youth and their parents, and analyzing and reporting of evaluation results. She also works to build evaluation capacity within the Children & Youth Institute by providing instruction and guidance on evaluation topics. Chelsea previously worked with the University of Minnesota Extension on the Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, Healthy Learners project, which sought to build supportive learning environments and community connections within a high needs school in St. Paul, MN. Chelsea received her Ph.D. in Child Development from the University of Minnesota in 2016, where her research focused on young children’s understanding of social groups in early childhood. You can find

Scott has been an early childhood educator for 30 years. He has been a preschool center director and preschool ministry leader in a church. He has taught elementary school. He developed and edited curriculum for a religious publisher for 15 years. Currently, Scott is a freelance curriculum writer and editor, a workshop leader, and a school volunteer. Mike Huber!

Mike Huber has dedicated his life to serving children, families, and the field of early childhood. He has been an early childhood teacher since 1992 and currently teaches at Seward Child Care Center in Minneapolis. Mike has also worked as a trainer and consultant for the Minnesota Department of Education, the Child Care Resource and Referral Network, and the Minnesota Association for the Education of Young Children. Mike served on MnAEYC’s board from 2007 to 2011, presents at local and national early childhood conferences, and has written for Teaching Young Children and a number of stories, songs, and puppet shows for children.

He is the winner of the 2012 Kate Davidson Tanner Award from MnAEYC, the Scholastic Early Childhood Professional Award, Honorable Mention in 2006, and Teacher Leadership from Hamline University, Master of Arts Education Program, 2006. Amanda Hodel!

Amanda S. Hodel, PhD, is a recent graduate of the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota.  Dr. Hodel holds doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in child psychology, along with an additional bachelor’s degree in statistics.  Her graduate training was in the area of developmental cognitive neuroscience, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Kathleen M. Thomas.

Dr. Hodel’s passion for the field of child psychology extends across research and teaching.  Her research  explores the impact of children’s early life experiences on long-term trajectories of brain development.  She is currently a course instructor at the University of Minnesota and at Augsburg College, where she loves conveying her enthusiasm for “babies and brain development” with undergraduate students.  Through programs such as Brain Awareness Week and outreach work through the Center for Neurobehavioral Development, Dr. Hodel also shares her expertise with the broader community, including elementary through high school-aged students.  Dr. Hodel enjoys hiking and camping through remote areas of the US and Canada with her husband and son (age 2).

Dr. Hodel will be leading our dialogue on Feb. 2nd, 2017, regarding chapter 1 of Sara Langworthy’s book  Bridging the Relationship Gap: Connecting with Children Facing Adversity.

How To Complete an EYM: Beyond The Pages Online, Self-Study Book Study

This is the newest feature on my blog. Beyond the Pages (BTP) is an innovative online book study. This feature takes you ‘beyond the pages’ and creates group dialogue. Stacie Goffin has charged those in early childhood education to engage in “conversations with intent” and I believe that this is one method to do that. What makes it unique? It’s open to teachers, providers, parents, lawmakers, and anyone whose decisions impact young children. There are also guest content experts who will lend their voices to facilitate each week’s discussion! It is my genuine hope that this book study feature intrigues individuals, serves as inexpensive professional development, provides access to resources otherwise not attainable, and encourages meaningful conversations. Learn. Love. Lead.

 

The book studies were originally released LIVE and therefore have correlating dates, etc. in the timeline. That being said, they’re now self-study, meaning that participants can complete them at their convenience and on their own schedule. It is recommended that participants read the chapter(s) that correlate with the guest content expert commentary.

 

Example: Akilah is going to get started on Sat. She sees on the EYM blog that the first reading for the Beyond The Pages Goffin book study is for Chapter 1. She reads that chapter on Sat. evening. On Sunday, Akilah goes to the EYM blog BTP book study and under Timeline, she clicks on Chapter 1 which takes her to the guest expert commentary (by Kyra). She considers both the chapter read and the expert commentary, linking it to her previous experiences and knowledge. She then provides personal reflection in the Comments section (Leave a Reply- under Comments) of the blog. She also has access to other participant comments and can respond to them as well. Akilah has flexibility in completing the remaining sessions of the study. If she is seeking a certificate, Akilah needs to provide reflective thoughts and ideas for each session/week of the study, responding to chapters and guest experts under the Comments area of each expert blog post. After full participation, payment, and verification, Akilah will be emailed a certificate of completion (MN participants entered into Develop)…all from the comfort and ease of her home.

Beyond The Pages ECE Book Study: Chapter 4 (Week 8)

Welcome to the final week of study and conversation on Professionalizing Early Childhood Education as a Field of Practice: A Guide to the Next Era by Stacie G. Goffin. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to learn from each of you over the past eight weeks and I look forward to future opportunities Dawn will create, providing intentional space for our beloved early childhood community.

From your responses it’s clear you own your professional responsibilities towards children, their families, and your colleagues. So many of you serve in multiple roles: educators, mentors, coaches, administrators, instructors in higher education – in addition to nurturing your own families!

Professionalism in early childhood education exists and you’ve given voice to current issues and policies that impact your work: compensation, credentials, organizational climate, standards, a “disparity crisis” in learning opportunities for children…and the list goes on.

Take a few moments and look through the comments and the wealth of shared information provided by members of this virtual community. Which topic resonates for you, feels personal, stirs up something you can stand behind? If after this book study your goal is to be an active policy agent, rather than a passive policy target (Heineke 2015) you’ll need just one topic to begin your intentional conversation in a way that feels authentic and comfortable to you.

Last week, Betsy Carlin highlighted key aspects of an intentional dialogue focusing on the role of the “facilitator.” Chapter 4 also reminds us, we must consider the environment where our conversations will take place. As early childhood educators, this is imagery we understand. Just as we ready our classroom environments to meet the needs of children each day, we must think about the welcoming and respectful settings we create to begin our early childhood dialogues.

If your objective is to invite others into your classroom or school to host an intentional conversation regarding early childhood education, does your environment make visible your belief about the importance of young children? Stacy suggests, “pictures of children propped on easels or taped to a wall remind us that these conversations are about something larger than our individual roles or ambitions” (p. 66).  Or perhaps you prefer more personal settings and plan to begin an intentional conversation when you’re visiting a family in their home. Ultimately, your goal is to be inclusive; and whether hosting a group or only one other individual, we must come together to exchange in a spirit of mutual learning and exploration.

Earlier this month, NAEYC created such an inclusive environment for early childhood educators. The 2016 Public Policy Forum in Washington, DC provided participants with the opportunity to expand their understanding of federal policy and it’s impact locally. Truthfully, this was a new area for me and I felt a bit out of my comfort zone. But NAEYC had created a safe environment for it’s AEYC affiliates and we had the opportunity to meet our local delegates (R.I. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse).

Challenging, but productive conversations were had and I believe our field moved a little bit forward on the professional continuum – I know I did! Professionalism at the individual-level always falls along a continuum, with no visible endpoint. So, maybe it stands to reason that professionalism for the early childhood field is also about continuous improvement, always moving forward together.

So how will you help to move the field forward? Remember, to begin you need just one topic that you’re passionate about. For this week’s response, please share your topic and your plans for initiating the dialogue. Will you invite a small group or will you speak to a co-worker or a family member? And how will you prepare the setting for this conversation? How will you ensure a trusting and welcoming environment?

I’ll continue to monitor your responses and look forward to our collective conversation.
